ABOUT DEPARTMENT
The Department of Microbiology was established in 1995. The Department offers a 3 year program in BSc Microbiology, 2 year program in MSc Microbiology and PhD Microbiology. The Department works to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to become competent professionals, by providing hand-on experience, exposure to a wide variety of microbiological experiments and extension activities. The curriculum promotes holistic knowledge and realistic assessment of the field. It is appropriately divided between core subjects, internships and interaction with the field experts through organizing seminars, conferences and workshops.

To produce skilled and competent microbiologists with ethical values needed for academics, research, industry and society.

The Department of Microbiology conducted the 30th Annual Microbiology Association Inauguration on 05.08.2025. The chief guest Dr T.V. Sajeev, Chief Scientist, Department of Entomology, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Thrissur, Kerala delivered the inaugural address and delivered a talk on “Microbiology as Social Science”. The seminar promoted a broader understanding of Microbiology as a tool for social development and public wellbeing, encouraging participants to apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges through a socially responsible approach. Students and staff actively participated in the program.



● The Department of Microbiology inaugurated the Microbiology Association on 07.08.2024 at Vivekananda Hall. The Chief guest Dr.K.Kathirvelu, Scientist ‘F’ & Additional Director, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Govt of India, Bharathiar University Campus, Coimbatore delivered a special talk on the topic “Strategic R&D in Nation Building: Microbiome of Biodefence”.
● The Department of Microbiology conducted a Student Development Program on the topic Ergonomics & Fitness for Students on 09.01.2025 at 9:45 am at the Conference hall. Mr.Abhaydev K S, Physiotherapist, Eumed Hospital, Palakkad, Kerala handled the session.
● Department of Microbiology along with Nature Club of Sree Narayana Guru College conducted an Extension Programme on “Swachata Abhiyan- Cleaning Campaign” on 25/01/2025
at Kava Near Malampuzha Reservoir & Forest Area, Walayar Range, Western Ghats with the assistance of Forest Department, Government of Kerala .Mr. Mohammadali Jinna. S, Range Forest Officer delivered a talk on “Problems associated with Plastic Pollution in Forest”. The team collected 4 bags of Non-Biodegradable waste from the area. The collected wastes were handed over to the forest department.
● YRC and the Department of Microbiology jointly organized a workshop on the topic “Basic First Aid Techniques” on 06.02.2025 at the Conference hall. Dr.Nidhin M S, Deputy Manager, Production, The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, Coimbatore Ltd, acted as resource Person. He delivered a speech and demonstrated Basic First Aid Techniques to be done in different situations.
